European Christmas Market River Cruises: Experience the Holidays at Your Own Pace

A Different Way to Move Through the Season

European Christmas markets river cruises have a way of pulling you in. . . soft glowy lights, familiar holiday tunes in a foreign land. The scent of mulled wine and bratwurst drifts through ancient town squares.

The markets are festive and joyful! But don’t get me wrong, they can also be busy and cold. Not to mention surprisingly tiring when you try to see too many at once. Plus my belly can only handle so much gluhwein! And why do crowds make me so tired?!

A European Christmas market river cruise offers a different way to experience the season. There’s no racing from city to city trying to route along windy roads with low cell service. Then you have to find a parking spot for your rental. On a river cruise you move with the river. Flow through the heart of Christmas during the day and cozy warmth of your own room at night. It’s a much gentler rhythm. One that leaves room to enjoy the season as it unfolds along the next bend in the river. . . and at your own pace.

Cruising European Christmas Markets by River Cruise. . . No Pressure to Do It All

My first Christmas Market was actually in Budapest on a Danube River Cruise. The day had been rainy and as the hangries came out, we ducked inside the market hall for some Goulash to warm up. Refresh and refueled we step out a different door onto the riverside square. Voilà, the bells of your favorite Christmas carol pulled us in like bees to honey.

The cute log cabins were filled with warm lights and gifts. The smell of popcorn, bratwurst and potatoes and gluhwein, and we were like fireflies to light. We stayed there all afternoon, packed in with the rest of Pest excited for the holiday season. We left more than slightly intoxicated (rum in wine? yes please!) The wine loosened our pocketbooks and everyone on our list received Paprika and Hungarian Folk Art embroidery. Yikes!

We loved it and had too much all at the same time. It was the only market on our cruise itinerary and we wanted to literally hug it all! I think we spent 2 hours there just walking in circles taking turns in the line for gluhwein.

After that experience we made the decision to explore a Christmas market focused itinerary to flow through the experience. Without the intensity of only one opportunity but multiple stops on one trip.

European Christmas markets are magical, but how you experience them matters. A river cruise allows the season to unfold naturally, without the pressure to do everything or see it all at once. You step into the festivities when it suits you, step back into warmth and comfort when you need it, and let the river carry you to what’s next.

If your idea of a perfect holiday includes festive lights, good food, historic cities, and a pace that leaves you energized rather than exhausted, a Christmas market river cruise itinerary might be exactly the right fit.
